Welcome to “18? Section 8!”. The reason for this site is simple: as an organization that serves families of individuals with developmental disabilities, we hear too often about individuals who are in their mid-20s or older who have yet to apply for a Sec. 8 housing voucher. They and their families are now ready and eager for them to move into independent living, but they now face a wait of anywhere from 5-12 years for a voucher. This problem could have been avoided had an application been submitted when the person turned 18.
The audience for this site is family members who have a relative with a permanent disability that limits his/her ability to afford housing. Individuals with disabilities are also welcome, although you will find the language is geared to families, not persons with disabilities. While we presume competence, it is also true that many individuals will need significant assistance from family to complete the Sec. 8 application process.
If you are here, it is probably because of the video “18? Section 8!”:
This site is geared toward residents of Massachusetts. While others will learn some general information about how Sec. 8 works, much of the information is specific to Massachusetts.
